10 Reasons You Should Live Abroad in Sydney, Australia

10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD LIVE ABROAD IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

One of the greatest adventures of my life was my 5-month move to the Land Down Under. Having traveled there for a short 10-day trip the previous year, I knew I had to see more. Jetting off to an Australian summer, leaving behind a Minnesota winter, was a decision that felt mindless.

The coastlines are endless, locals friendly and vibes relaxed, it is the perfect place to call a temporary home. Here is my list of reasons why you should consider the Land Down Under as a new place to call home.

ONE OF THE BEST CLIMATES IN THE WORLD

Sydney is known for its generously long, warm summers and mild winters. The season’s transition lazily, offering consistently sunny, warm days 365 days a year. Nowhere else in the world will you have the opportunity to enjoy the sun on gorgeous beaches, a charming harbor, and a unique city center no matter what time of year it is.

STUNNING BEACHES

From the iconic shores of Bondi Beach to the surfer-friendly tides in the Northern Beaches, Sydney attracts all kinds in their beach dwellings, they are a way of life for the Aussies. Each beach has something different to offer than the last, whether it be high tide Manly or the cozy, secluded beach under the cliffs at Tamarama. These beaches often come with serene coastal walks and rock pools, bringing endless opportunities for activity.  Read our Ultimate Guide To Sydney’s Beaches for a list of our favorite beaches in Sydney.

A LARGE CITY MADE UP OF SMALL, UNIQUE CITIES

Sydney is incredibly dynamic, each and every neighborhood or suburb has something new and exciting going on. With influence from cultures around the world, you will feel like you have entered a completely new country just by going a few blocks over. Each city or suburb is easily accessible by bus, ferry, train or even walking and offers up the opportunity to experience a wealth of culture in an easy, convenient way.

THE PEOPLE ARE RAD

With a laid back lifestyle highly prioritized for the Aussies, the attitude and friendliness resemble this way of living. The pace of life here is slow and easy, you won’t often see a solemn face or an un-welcomed glare, the locals value their visitors and make it known. Get to know the locals, you can learn the slang and pick up on the commonalities of a Sydney-sider, they will give you insights you can’t find on your own and will love doing it.

THE CULTURE IS VIBRANT AND EXCITING

Sydney is one of the most magical cities in the world, with a heavy influence in art, culture, and history, you truly never see a dull moment in this dazzling city.

With events like Vivid Sydney, Sydney Festival, Mardi Gras and Handa Opera, you are able to experience some of the most authentic, vibrant cultures of Australia in the most unique way. Vivid Sydney is an event some people dream about seeing, over the course of two months you will see the city turn into a spirited, lively, colorful dreamland.

Handa Opera illustrates something so distinctly Sydney. the arts and history are highly renowned here and the month-long opera showcase is something so rare you can only experience it in this way in Sydney.

INCREDIBLE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

I cannot say enough about the public transportation system in Sydney. You can easily get across 90% of the entire city in less than 40 minutes and you can do it without breaking the bank. Sydney has busses, trains, and ferries all accessible by one, simple transport card known as the Opal Card. Not only is it simple to use, but it is also easy to navigate too. With the TripGo app, you can get yourself around the city efficiently and without stress.

Not only is the transportation system easy, but it is also clean. The bus stations are safe and clean, while the busses keep the same tidiness. The train conditions are the best I have ever seen, they have tons of space across two levels, comfortable seats and cleanliness you wouldn’t expect. Every city should be learning from the Sydneysider way of doing things.

ACCESS TO AUSTRALIA’S BEST ROAD TRIPS

The entire country of Australia is known for its road trip experiences that are unlike anywhere else in the world. Sydney has access to a big chunk of these notorious road trips. The Great Ocean Road is perhaps the most well-known and sought out the trip from both tourists and locals. This road takes you along the breathtaking coastline from Sydney to Melbourne and truly can’t be beaten.

Sydney also has incredible road trips to surrounding areas like the Blue Mountains or Newcastle or even to the outback, you won’t find a bad route from Sydney to some of the top spots in the country.

AMAZING FOOD SCENE

I feel like it is easy to say a city has incredible food, and truthfully most cities do. What I find unique about Sydney’s food scene is its ability to create cuisine that is a cultural experience. Emphasis on taste is important here, but its the attention to the cultural influence that makes the food scene here so unique. Sydney pays attention to culture from around the world by bringing it to the vast amount of restaurant options they offer.

Sydney also has these incredible markets across the city, with some of the best local farmers and owners serving up their finest dishes.  Check out my Food Guide to Sydney for more on the illustrious dining spots and local favorites in Sydney.

NIGHTLIFE THAT RIVALS NEW YORK AND LONDON

Do you think New York and London has some of the most worldly clubs and nightlife scene? Wait until you see Sydney’s. Let me first say that the Aussies like to drink, a notorious stigma they can’t seem to fight off. With clubs, you have probably seen in movies and classic old-time pubs on every corner, there is really no way to avoid a party here. On Sunday’s catch the local socialites at Coogee Pavilion for live music and a beachside party under the glowing sunset or catch the wild ones taking a dip fully clothed at famous Ivy Club, you won’t want to miss your chance to be a part of the fun here in Sydney.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

With over 500 national parks in Australia, almost half of them are situated near Sydney. The nature experiences are literally endless. Sydney holds immense value in their natural landscapes and the dynamic offerings they have. From coastal walking trails to rainforests and waterfalls, there is a nature experience at your fingertips no matter what your vibe is.
